Do You Feel Self-Conscious About Your Gummy Smile?
Have you ever looked at a photo of yourself smiling and wished less of your gums showed? If so, you’re certainly not alone.
Many people feel self-conscious about what’s often called a “gummy smile” – where a larger amount of gum tissue is visible above the upper teeth when smiling. While there’s absolutely nothing wrong with having a gummy smile, some people feel it affects their confidence and can even make them avoid smiling in photos or social situations.
At Distinctly Dental, we often meet patients who tell us they love their smile in every other way but wish they could show a little less gum when they smile. The good news is that there are several treatment options available, and for the right patient, lip repositioning can be a simple and effective solution.
What Causes a Gummy Smile?
There isn’t one single cause of a gummy smile. It can happen for a variety of reasons,
including:
• An upper lip that lifts higher than average when you smile
• Excess gum tissue covering part of the teeth
• Teeth that appear smaller due to wear or gum coverage
• The way the jaw developed
• Genetics
That’s why the first step is always a thorough consultation. We’ll take the time to understand what’s causing your gummy smile and discuss the most suitable options for you.
What Is Lip Repositioning?
Lip repositioning is a minimally invasive procedure designed to reduce the amount of gum that’s visible when you smile.
The treatment works by gently limiting how far the upper lip lifts when smiling. This helps create a more balanced smile without changing the appearance of your teeth.
At Distinctly Dental, the procedure is carried out by Dr Ezgi Cilingir, an experienced dentist with a special interest in helping patients improve their smile confidence. Dr Cilingir has achieved excellent results for patients looking to reduce excessive gum display and create a more balanced smile.
Ezgi takes a thoughtful, personalised approach to treatment and understands that every smile is unique. She’ll take the time to understand your concerns, explain your options clearly, and help you decide whether lip repositioning is the right choice for you.
What Happens During Treatment?
The procedure is performed using local anaesthetic, so the area will be completely numb and comfortable throughout treatment.
A small strip of tissue is removed from the inside of the upper lip, and the lip is then repositioned slightly lower. This reduces the amount it can lift when you smile, helping to minimise gum display.
Treatment can usually be completed in a single appointment, often in less than an hour.
Why Do Patients Choose Lip Repositioning?
• A More Balanced Smile
• Minimally Invasive
• Quick and Convenient
• A Confidence Boost
What Is Recovery Like?
Recovery is usually very manageable.
You can expect some mild swelling, tightness, and tenderness for a few days, but most
patients return to their normal routines quite quickly. We’ll provide detailed aftercare
instructions and be on hand if you have any questions during the healing process.
Nervous About Dental Treatment?
One thing we hear regularly at Distinctly Dental is, “I’m a nervous patient.”
Whether you’ve had a difficult experience in the past or simply feel anxious about dental
treatment, our team understands. We pride ourselves on creating a calm, friendly environment where patients feel listened to, supported, and never rushed.
We’ll always take the time to explain your treatment, answer your questions, and make sure
you’re comfortable every step of the way.
Could Lip Repositioning Be Right for You?
Lip repositioning may be a good option if:
• Your gummy smile is mainly caused by a hyperactive upper lip
• You’re looking for a less invasive alternative to more extensive surgery
• Your teeth and gums are healthy
• You’d like a more balanced smile appearance
Not every gummy smile is the same, which is why a consultation is so important. In some
cases, treatments such as orthodontics, crown lengthening, composite bonding, or a
combination of treatments may achieve the best result.
For example, if excess gum tissue is covering part of the teeth and making them appear
short, a gingivectomy may be recommended. This procedure involves carefully reshaping or
removing excess gum tissue to reveal more of the natural tooth surface and create a more
balanced smile.
Similarly, crown lengthening may be an option when additional tooth structure needs to be
exposed. This treatment reshapes the gum tissue and, in some cases, a small amount of
underlying bone to increase the visible length of the teeth and improve the overall
appearance of the smile.
During your consultation, we’ll assess the underlying cause of your gummy smile and
recommend the most appropriate treatment, or combination of treatments, to help you
achieve the result you’re looking for.
