Conscious Sedation for Anxious Dental Patients
The definition of conscious sedation as practiced in the UK is as follows: A technique in which the use of a drug or drugs produces a state of depression of the central nervous system, enabling treatment to be carried out, but during which verbal contact with the patient is maintained throughout the period of sedation. This definition describes a state of sedation and does not prescribe how this is achieved.
All dental treatments can be carried out under sedation, by prior arrangement. Intravenous sedation is very predictable and can be tailored to suit the specific needs of individual patients. Sedation is suitable even for the most anxious patients, including those who in the past had treatment done under general anaesthesia. It is also very suitable for longer procedures such as complicated crown and bridge work or implants.
During treatment patients tend to feel much more relaxed and are generally very comfortable with having dental treatment performed. As mentioned above the patient retains the ability to communicate with the dentist and respond to requests the dentist may have. During longer procedures patients may even drift into a natural sleep due to their relaxed state.
Most patients remember very little, if anything, of their treatment. After sedation patients tend to feel a bit drowsy and would usually choose to take a nap when they get home. Most patients will have fully recovered from the effect of the sedative drugs after six to eight hours. However, it can take as long as 24 hours to clear your system and therefore patients are advised to avoid driving or using machinery etc. for 24 hours after their procedure. Besides drowsiness, other side effects are extremely rare.
Patients are required to be escorted home by an able-bodied adult as their reaction time will be affected and there may also be a degree of memory loss during this period. Before your sedation the anaesthetist will contact you to discuss your medical history and to answer any questions you may have regarding sedation.

FAQs
A small cannula is placed into a vein and the drugs are administered through it.
The effect starts within seconds, which helps anxious dental patients feel relaxed quickly. Depending on the length of the procedure, the drugs will be topped up at regular intervals, or will be dripping in continuously
You will NOT be put to sleep- that is only allowed in a hospital. However, the drugs will make you feel relaxed and a bit drowsy, so patients do often fall asleep for parts of the treatment.
During your treatment you should experience no pain, which is reassuring for anxious dental patients. If you were to feel any discomfort (e.g. if the local anaesthesia starts to wear off during long procedures), you will be able to tell us so we can address that.
If you have had a surgical procedure, you will have some pain after the treatment.
Yes, you will be aware of the treatment as it happens. However, you will be comfortable and relaxed and not care, which many anxious dental patients find surprising. Most patients have very little recollection of the treatment after the procedure, so patients often think that they must have been asleep.
Most patients have very limited recollection of the treatment after sedation, which is often beneficial for anxious dental patients. However, it is impossible to predict what you will remember. Remember: we do not sedate you to make you forget, but to make you comfortable. Forgetting some of the treatment does make the time seem to pass very quickly for the patient.
You will feel drowsy. Most patients will have a nap once they get home. The effects will gradually wear off, usually over 6-8 hours. You will need to be taken home by an able-bodied adult who will need to care for you until you have fully recovered.
